Vanity Search!!!

In class we talked about doing a vanity search on our name over the internet to see what is out there on the internet about us. I recently decided to check this out for myself and was somewhat surprised about the outcome!! After seeing some of our class examples I figured there would definitely be something of me on the search but after conducting it I did not find anything, at least on the first few pages. So the end result was acceptable. Seeing that it already seems "big brother" like that everything is already out there somewhere on the internet I would have to say I wasn't too upset about not finding my information on the first few pages!!

Guest Speaker Mark Briggs!!

The creator of Journalism 2.0 & service software company Serra Media, Mark Briggs both an author and entrepreneur decided to take the risk of guest speaking in our classroom on Monday October 19th, 2009. Alright so maybe not your typical example of entrepreneurship but his overall presentation on Journalism & technology was very informative. Mark not only went over himself and what he has accomplished but also how technology has impacted journalism today. Coming from someone who has experienced transitioning times for many writers, his presentation was very credible. Having interest in both business & technology I especially enjoyed his talk on how he got everything started for Serra Media. All together I believed the presentation was excellent!!

Experience with Creating HTML

We were given a handout on how to create our first HTML page, however this was not my first experience with creating an HTML file. My first experience was back in a computer information systems class where learning how to make your own HTML page was part of course. As a refresher I decided to read through the "My First Page" handout & execute the simple HTML file. With the previous experience it was pretty straight forward in creating the basic layout. My only issue that I overlooked was making sure to save in .html and not .txt which I quickly adjusted when it would not load as a browser, a simple fix. Overall it was successful!!

Impact of Online Publications on Newspapers

Theres always something interesting in a newspaper to check out whether its a local news article, a classified, or maybe the comics but what if an article headline displayed that newspapers could be slowly coming to an end. So far this does not seem entirely untrue when observing how online publication has continued to grow, and with this being said it shows no sign of slowing up either! So exactly how has the internet changed newspapers: first we compare the idea that viewing articles of news, sports, etc. on the web is a huge physical resource saver. No ink or paper is directly needed for any display of online publication and with any emphasis on the idea of "going green" this only seems like a positive reinforcement for many. Secondly the content in newspapers is alwasy going to be in an uphill battle, why you may ask? Well online publication has an unimaginable amount of space to display information versus newspapers that are limited on pages. Finally the availability between the two sources, newspapers are only available where sold or delivered. Online publication is at your fingertips (as long as you have internet access) and will continue to be exposed with greater technology developments.
To tie everything together newspapers have changed in several ways, many of which have resulted to shutting down or becoming web only (example: Seattle PI = web only). Competition has increased because of all the comparisons mentioned above about online publication however all of this is not to be confused with the idea that newspapers are becoming extinct because I don't necessairly think that this is entirely what will happen but rather a change in what newspapers will have to offer later on down the road.

Postal mail Vs. E-Mail

The idea of mail & the postal service has been around for a very long time however today our more modern look on mailing has turned to electronic mailing or e-mail for short. When comparing the two ways of communication there are several differences among them both as well as similarities but for now we will focus on what makes the two unique from eachother.
Postal Mail is different than e-mail by what process it must endure, how long it takes, & resources that are utilized in making the mail itself. First of all paper, ink, & many more materials are used to create mail, without it this would simply not exist. The postal service itself is what moves our mail, a transporting service is crucial otherwise we would not have postal mail. Lastly to go from point A to point B is anywhere from a short to sometimes a lengthy process depending on where it has to travel, so amount of time upon arrival is a variable among postal mail.
Now to look at e-mail differences we look at pros & cons of efficiency, risk, & also how long it takes. Cons with efficiency are highlighted by making the mistake to correctly type in the address of the reciever, by doing so you will not send the mail to the correct location, however an upside to e-mail efficiency is that if you do have the recievers address typed in correctly it is a guaranteed delivery (unless of course there is an issue with electronics!!) With e-mail you have to understand that virusus can pose a threat on the user by creating risk with unknown senders of e-mail that you have recieved. Finally how long it takes to deliver e-mail is by far the most effiecient way in sending mail seeing that it takes a matter of seconds (if that)!!
